Bain & Company’s Social Impact practice works in partnership with leading social innovators on lasting, transformative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges. In 2015, we made a commitment to invest $1 billion in pro bono consulting over 10 years to help our clients, many of them nonprofit organizations, tackle their toughest strategic challenges and achieve their full potential. Our practice team liaises closely with client-facing consulting teams on the critical issues our clients are tackling in education, economic development, and the environment. We also manage several internal people engagement initiatives to help Bain talent gain access to Social Impact opportunities, outside of casework.


  • The primary mission of Knowledge Specialists is to use their own accumulated expertise to identify best insights and enrich content that will build the practice knowledge base, fuel consultant’s thinking on their clients’ challenges, and enable our success in the Social Impact sector. This mission is accomplished by:
  • Highlighting and optimizing knowledge used in proposal situations and in the delivery of consulting projects
  • Owning and curating Bain’s knowledge base on critical themes, products, or trends impacting our clients
  • Capturing, sharing, and packaging Bain’s expertise


  • Mine existing content and create customized client-ready materials in response to case team and senior affiliate requests for internal knowledge in support of client development and serving activities
    • Advise and guide case teams and senior affiliates towards the best information to help answer client questions
    • Help identify and connect experts within the Bain network to consulting teams
    • Collaborate with The Bridgespan Group, Bain’s Information Services, or other departments to collectively provide consultants the best consolidated view of our internal and external knowledge of Social Impact
    • Develop and package summary documents and provide updated or bespoke analysis for experienced and senior audiences about Social Impact 
  • Own and curate the practice knowledge base
    • Work across practice leadership to get alignment on prioritization of content gaps and action plan for filling gaps
    • Develop and own tools and process for identifying and tracking gaps in our existing knowledge base
    • Own implementation plan and lead efforts to fill gaps from internal sources 
  • Identify, capture, and package our consulting teams’ and senior practice members’ knowledge in Social Impact
    • Collect, analyze, codify, and share data and information using our global knowledge management platform
    • Work directly with consulting teams, in coordination with other Knowledge Specialists and practices, to understand, capture and disseminate key insights from project work
    • Oversee Knowledge Associate in managing and maintaining the Social Impact knowledge base on Bain’s intranet

  • Contribute to the development and execution of the Practice strategy
    • Analyze, understand and interpret underlying drivers of practice performance, overseeing Knowledge Associate support of tracking and analysis
    • Assist with content planning and logistics for annual practice meetings
    • Drive practice affiliate engagement, including preparation for experience-sharing calls and publications 
  • Serve and contribute as a member of the department and larger Bain community, in line with Bain’s Operating Principles
    • Prioritize work, communicate issues and progress to supervisor
    • Assign, review, and provide feedback on junior practice member’s work, who are often located in another Bain office. Manage day to day workplan for juniors and provide coaching and development
    • Demonstrate flexibility with the changing demands of the industry, the leadership team, and commercial demand for varying products
    • Adopt a mindset of supporting and contributing to Bain’s team-focused community (e.g. training, mentoring, projects)


  • Minimum BA or equivalent undergraduate degree with strong academic credentials, Masters a plus
  • 4+ years of experience in a global professional services firm, including at least 2 years of relevant experience in Social Impact, with exposure to one or more of the following disciplines: consulting, research and analysis, knowledge management, nonprofit management, strategic planning, business development, product development, marketing, and/or project management. Front-end consulting or people management experience is an advantage
  • Demonstrated passion for Social Impact topics

  • Business-level English language spoken and written skills required; second language beneficial (i.e. language spoken in home office)
  • Proficiency with application of MS-Office toolkit (Excel, PowerPoint & Word). Working knowledge of Alteryx and Tableau. A desire to learn advanced applications of analytical tools
